Baby Grandmothers

”Baby Grandmothers” are one instrumental rockband from Sweden that released one record back in 1968. Not many would have thought that some 50 years later a brand new album would be released for the masses, yet here we are with 7 new songs. We sent over some questions to the band and here´s their answers.

"Baby Grandmothers" live in Stockholm 2017.

First of all really great to have the band back. Why did it take so many years in between the albums?

Kenny: There was only one single recorded and released 1968. The recording that was released 2009  was live from the rock club Filips 1967 and made by Anders Lind, who later started record company Silence. The release of that album 2009 gave us a reason to try it together again. That was so  inspiring for me, and us, that the thought popped up to actually do some recordings in  a proper studio for the first time. And thanks to Anders Lind, who nowadays have a great studio in the woods of Wermland, and  who let us spend some time there for a very low cost, we managed to put some songs together  for an album.

Could you tell us briefly about the new album “Merkurius” and the stories behind each song:

Kenny:

-          “Peloton”
Peloton is the big group chasing the small ”break out” group in a bicycle race, i e ”Tour de France”. The same can be transferred into society, you have to fit in, or we will chase you...

-          “ADHD”
A state of mind...

     -          “Intervall”
Life goes in intervalls. We learn in intervalls...

-          “Elefant”
The Elephant struggle for Nirvana

-          “Dojjan”
Don’t judge your neighbor before walking in his boots.

-          “Kraftverk”
KRAFTVERK = power plant = Kraft werk, the need of energy

-          “Merkurius”
Mercuries is crying for her sister Earth. Something is wrong, and she can’t  understand what.

Where did you record the album and what recording techniques did you use in regards of “live takes” or overdubs? Also who was the sound engineer and who produced the album?

Kenny: We recorded it in Silence Studio in Koppom, Wermland. The recording engineer was Anders  Lind, the owner of the studio. Recorded on hard drive, digital. Then I was doing some  editing and extras in my home studio.

You have played live for some years now with the band. When you got the band back did you only thought of playing concerts or was there ever a thought of also releasing some new songs?

Kenny: Our first thought was to have fun in ”rehearsal” room. Then we did a five minute gig in a  theatre for a special occasion. Then one happening after an other, and suddenly we had some  material we could work on.

You have a line-up which consists of one guitar, one bass and one drummer. Your sound is quite “open” and has more “space” and “air” than other bands like for example “Kebnekajse”, where Kenny and Per also plays. Was this a conscious decision to keep the songs as free as possible from “multitracks” and overdubs? Also are there any songs on the new album with any guestmusicians?

Kenny: This formate, three peace band, is a very ultimate one. All three of us are allowed to do  almost anything that comes into mind. Actually no ”rehearsal” is needed. Keep an open mind,  and listen. Of course we have themes to open with, but they can end in all kinds of way...

                                                         Drums and percussions.

You released the new album “Merkurius” in November of 2018. What are your future plans in regards of touring the new album and so on?

Kenny: We do not have any organization behind us to produce any tours, or even make plans, so we  take it as it comes, day by day, and hope there will pop up a gig here or there.

You are obviously a lot older then when you first started out. What have you learned during all these years as musicians?

Kenny: I guess patience. Enjoy the times you are able to perform your music. Actually, enjoy every  time you are able to sit and play your instrument, in public or in solitude. That is a  beautiful gift that has taken me through moments of joy and sorrow.

Last question for this time. Do you have more unreleased songs that might appear on an upcoming album some time ahead in the not so distant future or is this the “final deal”?

Kenny: We/I still have a lot of ideas we want to realize. And we won’t give up even when in  heaven. And there we will continue with a lot of good friends and musicians.
