ÖRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE

Øresund Space Collective has just released their new album entitled "Everyone Is Evil" and Dr.Space was kind enough to answer our questions...here´s what he had to say:

First of all, how are you all doing out there in space?

Dr Space: Busy working in my garden, recording bands in the studio, finishing releases and working on mixes for 2 new bandcamp subscriber songs from our last OSC studio session from Sept 2022. Also trying to promote my new solo album (https://drspace1.bandcamp.com/album/suite-for-orchestra-of-marine-mammals).

You have just released your latest album ”Everyone Is Evil”. What was the thought behind the title?

Dr Space: We had just come out of the room from having this amazing jam and some of the guys who did not play on it or did and left the room (it was 64mins long), when we came into the control room, they were pretty blown away and Hasse (bass player), commented based on the vibe of the song, “Everyone is Evil” and I wrote that down on my paper, where I was making notes of who was playing on each jam. It has nothing to do with war, human nature….. It is a bit provocative..

How was the recording sessions this time around? You had quite a lot of different musicians who contributed to the album?

Dr Space: The last studio session was the most diverse we had ever had. We also had a lot of time and different musicians coming, some for only a few days and others longer and my musical partner in Doctors of Space, the famous Martin Weaver, he joined one of the first and also one of the last days. We did a lot of experimenting and trying completely new ideas we had not explored in any of the other studio sessions. 18hrs of music was recorded over 35 jams!! Jonathan (Guitar, violin, bass) mixed 3 albums worth of the material and I have probably done 2 more so a lot of stuff will come out from this over the next year.

You totally improvise when you play out your jams…what is it with this free formula of free-jazz-impro that you dig?

Dr Space: It is all about musical freedom and not having to write songs. Just get great musicians into one room and after some minor discussions, see where the music takes us. It is so fun and exciting to make music this way and it is the only way ØSC has ever made music!!

One clever musician once said that a band should sound even better live than on record…In your case you already sound as good live as in a studio…what comes to your mind when we speak about live music vs. studio?

Dr Space: The musician who wrote that was probably referring to his own or other bands that actually play songs and with a lot of music it for sure can be more powerful and great live. Our concept is more or less the same live and in the studio but the audience can make a huge difference in the energy level for one thing. It is all improvised whether live in front of an audience or in the studio. All of our music is performed live (only the rare overdub on the final product).

If we dream for a while…which musicians that are no longer with us would you loved to have been playing with if you ever got the chance? Or shall we save all that when we are up in heaven with timeless jams? Imaging Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck jamming all day long…and Bob Marley singing sweet melodies for our ears…

Dr Space: We have lost a lot of great musicians over time but for me personally, I would have loved to had Duane Allman (he seem to be able to play any and all styles), Doug Walker (Alien Planetscapes), Frank Zappa, Fela Kuti to name a few.. As for musicians that are still alive, Frank Marino would be the top of my list but he is retired now. Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless, Black Crowes) would be another guitar player that would work great with us. Anders Becker (Mandra gora Lightshow society, Liquid Orbit), is an amazing keyboard player and has played live with us but never in the studio. It has to happen one day!!

Is there any funny anecdotes from the collectives backstory that you can share with us?

Dr Space: We are not a very wild and crazy band but I will never forget when Mads, after we finished the first set at Burg Herzberg Festival was reaching for a beer from a fan in the front row, slipped and smashed his head on the rail of the barrier. Damn, he had a small concussion and this huge lump. The doctors said he should not get back up on the stage but 20mins into the 2nd set, there he was again. Wow… what a trooper and epic 3.5hr show! When we were on tour in 2019 and went around the Baltic Sea, we played a show in Lithuania and part of the deal was to play at lunch time at a local middle school. That was a trip, to set up and play an hour of improvised space rock for teenagers. We tried to get them to join but hardly any were willing, It was mostly girls actually.. The principal of the school said that was by far the most cool thing that had ever happened at their school!!!

Now when you have released the new album will you be doing more live shows again?

Dr Space: We are not playing many shows anymore. It has become to complicated to set up and there is not usually enough money to cover expenses of me coming from Portugal, Jonathan from Stockholm, etc... Last few years we have been losing money playing live and not making any so shows will be pretty rare sadly.. It is just to difficult to get the money we need to break even. Sad… Maybe this will change. Below are the only shows we have for the rest of the year at the moment... Thy Lejer Festival, Thy, Denmark June 30th Kozfest, Axeminster, UK July 29th.

What has changed the most within the collective from when you first started up until now?

Dr Space: The biggest change is I have improved musically the most and we have brought in so many clever and creative musicians. They were also this in the beginning but we have evolved into much more than just a space rock band that we started out as. The concept has remained the same and some of the guys from 2006-2009 period still play with us on occasion, which is great. Hard to believe, next April it will be 20 years since we had the first jam session. Wow… It is still very fun. Even after 20 years, we still play to about the same amount of people except in Hamburg, where we can really get a decent audience…

And finally…what plans do you have for the future?

Dr Space: We have at least 2 more releases this year. A DVD and another studio album (both for the bandcamp subscribers first and later the public). Sept 2023 we will have another OSC studio session with some of the same and some different musicians from last time. We also hope for December to have Carnival in Portugal 2LP/2CD out from the Sept 2022 studio session. We will see…. '

Thank you very much for talking to us and may you float out in space on a long and pleasant journey!

Dr.Space: Thank you… peace from Dr Space (Scott)
